Achieving a diverse and inclusive workplace

Achieving a diverse and inclusive workplace

Achieving diversity (2).png

Earlier this week I share this image around the expectations of creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We often think the easiest way to achieve this is through solely recruiting more diverse people. Unfortunately, this may help on a surface level create diversity, however, these people will not excel or likely stay long if the working environment is not inclusive.

"Your ideas not being taken seriously, to others talking over you, infantilising and patronizing you, to the fact the job design and organistional structures actively make your working life challenging.

Inclusivity does not mean having working groups, which seemed to be the du jour of Diversity and Inclusion for awhile. While these may be useful to help others of similar backgrounds and identities find each other, they still do not get to the heart of the diversity, inclusion, and equity issues. All that does is further create in groups and out-groups. If you are a member of these groups, you most certainly sit in the out-group, and your working life will more than likely reflect that.

From your ideas not being taken seriously, to others talking over you, infantilising and patronizing you, to the fact the job design and organistional structures actively make your working life challenging.

I want to change the conversation, I want to move the focus from just recruitment and groups to meaningful changes to work that benefits everyone.

I will look at each of the areas I have identified in turn, to highlight why they are important to the overall goal of achieving diverse and inclusive workplaces that thrive.

Next week I will look deeper into culture and values and how they are the start of this all.

I look forward to sharing this with you all.
